Workplace Investigations

As of September 2016, employers are legally obligated to conduct investigations into incidents and complaints of workplace harassment according to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).  It's up to the employer to choose to investigate these complaints internally or hire an external investigator. Using internal employees to investigate the complaint may seem cost effective, but they may not have the skills, experience or time to carry out a thorough investigation. Having us do the investigation frees up your employees to do what they do best.

We are committed to providing effective, timely, evidence-based investigations at affordable rates. We save your organization time, money and help you avoid costly litigation in the future. We bring impartiality and confidentiality to the process, which is critical to the efficacy of your investigation. Our investigations will also reduce interruptions to your business while demonstrating to stakeholders that you take complaints seriously.

Our process uncovers facts, reveals evidence, and carefully assesses credibility. We provide management with a comprehensive and detailed written report of the findings of fact needed to make fair decisions.

"April is passionate about safe and healthy workplaces. She is compassionate, patient and listens. She is definitely my go-to person for workplace investigations. April is an absolute pleasure to work with, and is valuable to any business looking to navigate the increasingly difficult workplace issues that arise". - Kathryn Marshall, Employment Lawyer at Milburn & Associates

We investigate a range of complaints, including allegations of:

  • harassment or sexual harassment
  • bullying and workplace violence
  • misconduct and/or violations of policy
  • toxic work environments
  • discrimination under the Ontario Human Rights Code
  • failure to accommodate disabilities
  • anonymous complaints
As a Workplace Investigator, April uses her people skills to ensure your employees feel comfortable speaking truthfully about their experience. Less costly than a lawyer, April can find out if your workplace is safe from harassment. - Diana Tuszynski, The Benefits Edge

Investigations are good for your company.
Despite the initial discomfort that accompanies an external investigation it can create a path to healing and empowerment.  A thorough investigation is an opportunity for all parties to be heard by an independent neutral party. It can empower the organization to unearth the most appropriate next steps for producing positive change.
